Chassity Bynum

America's Next Natural Model 2012.

Chassity Bynum Winner of American Next Natural Model

Congratulations Chasity! How do you feel?
I am blissfully happy!

What went through your mind when you read the last email saying you had won?
I read the email at 3am and immediately felt like I hadn't slept at all. I was extremely happy and had a lot of other emotions at the same time.

Let's go back for a moment; how did you hear about the competition and why did you decide to join?
I was already familiar with the site and visited it for information for my group site where people with natural hair can meet. When I searched for this, I saw the match.

Can you tell us what you do in everyday life and how you were able to combine this competition with it? Have you done any modeling before?
Well, when I started the competition I had been a stay-at-home mom for a year and a half (I have two children, ages 7 and 2), but when Competition Assignment 7 started, I had just started a full-time job. I don't need to tell you it got really interesting then.

I've done some modeling now and then, but mostly during my college days. I had been out for a while, so it was nice to get a taste of the modeling world again.

People often underestimate this contest because it's an online contest, but I know it's hard work and you really have to put in the effort. What was the hardest part of the match for you?
Reading the comments was the hardest part of the game for me. I have a really smooth back and I'm very combative by nature so the comments didn't offend me but I was just eager to take on the next challenge to show and prove myself.

Which of the eight different assignments did you find the most difficult and why? And which was the most fun?
The most difficult assignment for me was the accessories assignment, because I had problems with my clothes during the shoot. Parts of myself I didn't want to show were on display, so I had to get really creative...all on Saturday! My favorite assignment from the Maroon assignment because it really touched me. I am familiar with challenges and tribulations as I suffered a heart attack after the birth of my youngest son. When you've had to fight for your life, you look at it differently. You accept challenges and face them with ease and confidence, because you know you can and must persevere.

America's Next Natural Model is put together in such a way that novice models learn what goes into a photo shoot to learn to think beyond the level of a model; You learn to think about the total picture, the photographer, location, style, decoration and so on. Do you think you have learned any of these elements?
I have learned everything above. As captain of this ship, I've really started to look at things differently. It is not easy at all and everything is at stake. You have to think in every possible way how you want the shoot to come across to the viewers. Experience is everything.

Who do you think was your biggest competitor?
I'd say Reshonda, because she was just as determined as I was.

You have won the top prize of 1000 dollars. What are you going to spend this on?
My 7 year old daughter seems to have already found all kinds of ways how 'we' can spend the money. I'm not over it yet, but at least I have help :).

You also won a photo shoot with Adrian Alicea, for which you will be brought to New York by Sula NYC and Iman Cosmetics was interested in shooting an introductory video with you. What do you think of that?
I do not get it. I am so excited about how it all turned out and feel blessed that this is even just the beginning!

Will you continue with modeling?
Modeling will always have a place in my heart. I came into contact with this even before I was a teenager. My mom wanted me to feel confident and proud of my squirrel teeth, the red Sally Jesse Raphael glasses I wore in 8th grade, and my skinny body. She wrote for classes that taught me about confidence, attitude, and etiquette. Now that I'm a grown woman, I'm always open to modeling and advancing the position of the black woman that the media often only highlights in one way.

Do you think naturally frizzy hair is all the rage or something permanent?
Naturally frizzy hair is permanent! As a country, we are increasingly concerned with health and people are becoming more aware of what they put in and on their bodies. The dangers of hair dye and chemicals are more well known than they used to be, so I hope sites like this will continue to educate people.

You had so many different hairstyles during the competition. Do you have a favourite?
My hairdresser went all out on my hair every week! I've enjoyed all the styles, but I personally don't like those intricate looks that much. So my personal favorite was the loose, wavy twist out. I love big hair!!!

How did your family support you during the match? Here's the chance to thank your supporters, family and friends.
I've had the best support during the competition! I am very blessed with that.

I want to give glory to God first and foremost!

I had a team of great people who literally got me through the game. My 'TEAM' consisted of my natural hairstylist Taji Shabu Jones, my photographer Dajuan Jones, Amani Smith natural jewelry designer, counselor Kim Smith, sister friend and advisor Geneva Michell.

My cheerleaders were my husband as the coach, my kids because they rewarded every picture they saw on the computer with an oooh and ahhh, my mom giving me her interpretation of what the judges said and a lot of friends and family praying for me and cheering me on during the competition.
